Joseph Calleja | Opera gala

Placed in a row with Luciano Pavarotti and Plácido Domingo, and even with the legendary Enrico Caruso, the Maltese tenor Joseph Calleja will be the star of an extraordinary opera gala in the golden hall of the Szczecin Philharmonic. This concert should not be missed by any opera lover, as it will be a real feast for music lovers who, among all instruments, value the human voice the most.

 

Gifted with a heavenly voice, Joseph Calleja (...) is probably the best contemporary lyrical tenor – writes Associated Press. The artist is currently the most sought-after opera singer in the world, and the most prestigious opera theaters on the globe compete for him. In the 2022/2023 artistic season alone, Calleja performed his signature role of Cavaradossi in Puccini's Tosca at the Paris Opera, the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona and the Deutsche Staatsoper in Berlin. He also played the role of Alfred in Verdi's La Traviata at the Bayerische Staatsoper and Don José in Bizet's Carmen at the Paris Opera. In previous seasons, his voice was admired by the audience of the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Royal Opera House in London and Covent Garden, to name but a few. He regularly performs alongside the greatest opera artists of our time, such as Diana Damrau, Renée Fleming and Plácido Domingo.

The artist can also boast a dozen or so albums, which he records for the very prestigious Decca label. Many of them became international bestsellers. He also made his successful acting debut in 2013 in James Gray's The Immigrant, in which he played the role of the legendary tenor Enrico Caruso opposite Marion Cotillard and Joaquin Phoenix. A year earlier, he won the Artist of the Year plebiscite of the prestigious British music magazine "Gramophone".

In addition to his intense artistic activity, Calleja is also known as a great philanthropist. He founded two foundations: Drake Calleja Trust and BOV Joseph Calleja Foundation. The first of them supports young talented musicians, the second deals with equal opportunities in access to health care among children.
